South House

Four thousand square feet of 'blank slate'

Overview

The first stage of the project was to design an addition for a two thousand square foot house that eventually turned it into a four thousand square foot house. The next step was to design every mantle, vanity in the house as well as the custom made kitchen. The next step was to find furniture for every room as well as pick out fabric for every pair of drapes, blinds and bedding. The photo above shows the formal sitting room. Silk drapes capped with gilded pelmets flank the custom fireplace. Antique lighting lends itself to the grand piano and custom silk sofa. The dining room is situated across from the formal sitting area so window treatments were carried through. An antique dining set was reupholstered to suits the space. The ceiling was finished in metallic gold to continue the formal style from the sitting room. The kitchen is custom built and designed for entertaining. A commercial grill and stovetop was installed requiring a large commercial vent. The vent was covered using the same materials as the cabinetry. The top of the island is granite, while the counter top is marble. Another view of the master suite. The propane fireplace looks through to the study. Front entrance to the house, a soft cream wash was used on the walls of the foyer to allow the transitional space to flow seamlessly into the stronger colours of the other rooms. Family room. Comfortable and informal, this area leads to the large wrap-around deck. The family room fireplace doubled as a TV stand. A local artist was commissioned to paint a scenic bit of Cape Breton (upper left). The painting was placed in the custom doors and used to cover the TV (upper right) when not in use. This washroom is downstairs off the games room. It was designed to be used by people coming in from the hot tub or in from the garden. The stone used is a Japanese slate. The Study is located on the fourth floor. Rich red walls are complimented with wood and leather furniture. Tiffany lights are placed throughout the room. This is the vanity in the master bath. It was designed to fit the space and custom built and finished off-site. The finish is a soft moss coloured wash over cream, which blends with the limestone. Several views of the two-person whirlpool tub. The limestone surround and pitch of the dormer gives it a cocoon-like private feel.
